Overview

Morocco in eight days, through its two most photogenic faces. Marrakech opens the journey: the Bahia Palace and its painted cedar ceilings, the Saadian Tombs sealed for two centuries and rediscovered in 1917, the electric blue of the Majorelle Garden with the Yves Saint Laurent Museum beside it, and above it all the twelfth-century Koutoubia minaret on which every other tower in Morocco was modelled. Evenings belong to Jemaa el-Fna, the square that empties at dusk and fills again an hour later with storytellers, musicians and food stalls. Then the argan road west to Essaouira: 180 flat kilometres past the goats that climb into the argan trees, ending at a walled Atlantic port laid out on a strict eighteenth-century grid. Three nights of ramparts, blue fishing boats, grilled sardines on the quay, women’s argan cooperatives and the trade winds that made this the kitesurfing capital of North Africa. You return to Marrakech for the Ben Youssef Madrasa and a sunset dinner under Berber tents in the stone desert of Agafay, forty minutes from the city.

What Makes This Tour Special?

  • Two UNESCO-listed medinas, each the opposite of the other: imperial, red and dense in Marrakech; white, blue and open to the ocean in Essaouira.
  • A single road transfer in the whole trip — 180 km of flat national road, no mountain pass, under three hours.
  • The argan groves and their tree-climbing goats, then a women’s cooperative where the oil is still pressed by hand.
  • Jemaa el-Fna after dark, listed by UNESCO as a masterpiece of intangible heritage.
  • The Majorelle Garden and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, booked on a timed slot so you skip the queue.
  • A boat tour around the Purpuraires Islands, home to the world’s largest colony of Eleonora’s falcons.
  • Sunset dinner under Berber tents in the Agafay stone desert — the desert imagery in an evening, instead of a twelve-hour round trip.
  • Two dedicated French-speaking guides and a professional photographer travelling with you throughout, plus a complete photo album.

Day 02 Imperial Marrakech — Palaces and Gardens

A full day among the treasures of the Red City. The Bahia Palace and its painted cedar ceilings, built in the 1860s for a grand vizier. The Saadian Tombs, walled up by Sultan Moulay Ismail and rediscovered only in 1917. Lunch in the medina, then the Majorelle Garden and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum beside it, booked on a timed slot to avoid the queue. Note that the Koutoubia mosque, like every working mosque in Morocco, is admired from the outside only.

Day 03 The Argan Road to Essaouira

Departure around nine on the N8 west: 180 kilometres of flat, well-surfaced national road, no mountain pass, about three hours with stops. Halfway along, the argan groves and the famous goats that climb into the branches, then a women's cooperative where the oil is still cracked and pressed by hand. Arrival in Essaouira for lunch, check-in, and a first walk along the Skala de la Ville with its Portuguese cannons facing the Atlantic.

Day 04 Essaouira — Medina and Fishing Port

The medina of Essaouira, listed by UNESCO, is unlike any other in Morocco: laid out on a strict grid in the 1760s by a French architect working for Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah, all whitewash and blue shutters. We walk the ramparts, the woodworkers' souk with its thuya marquetry, and the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah museum. Late morning at the fishing port for the boats coming in, and grilled sardines on the quay.

Day 05 The Atlantic — Purpuraires Islands and the Beach

A morning boat tour around the Purpuraires Islands, home to the largest colony of Eleonora's falcons in the world. Landing on the archipelago is not permitted, so we circle it from the water with the ramparts behind. The afternoon is given to the great beach: camel and horse rides along the sand, or a first kitesurfing lesson in the trade winds that made Essaouira the capital of the sport in North Africa.

Day 06 Back to Marrakech and Jemaa el-Fna by Night

A free morning in Essaouira for last purchases — argan oil, thuya wood, Gnaoua music — then the road back to Marrakech, about three hours. In the evening, the square: Jemaa el-Fna empties at dusk and fills again an hour later with storytellers, snake charmers, musicians and a hundred food stalls. UNESCO lists it as a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity. Dinner on a rooftop terrace overlooking the crowd.

Day 07 Ben Youssef Madrasa and Sunset in the Agafay Desert

Morning at the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the largest Quranic school in Morocco, reopened after a long restoration — carved cedar, stucco and zellige around a marble courtyard. Then the Museum of Marrakech in the Mnebhi Palace, and time in the souks with both guides to help you negotiate. Late afternoon, we drive forty minutes to the Agafay stone desert for a sunset dinner under Berber tents, with the High Atlas on the horizon. Screening of your photo report.

Day 08 Departure

A final Moroccan breakfast, then a private transfer to Marrakech-Menara International Airport, with photos and a personal album to treasure. A reminder from your guides: dirhams cannot legally leave Morocco beyond a small allowance, so change any surplus before check-in and keep your original exchange receipts.
