8 Days 7 Nights
Yaounde → Bafoussam → Yaounde
5h by Road Each Way
Royal Heritage
Eight days from the institutional heart of Cameroon to the royal courts of the western highlands. Yaoundé opens the journey with the National Museum, housed in the former presidential palace, the Reunification Monument and its contemporary art gallery, and the primates of the Mvog-Betsi zoological park. The N4 then climbs north-west through Bafia and Bangangté to Bafoussam and the Grassfields, where the Bandjoun chiefdom stands as one of the most spectacular pieces of traditional Bamileke architecture in Africa, alongside Bandjoun Station, the contemporary art foundation created by artist Barthélémy Toguo. The centrepiece is Foumban, capital of the Bamoun kingdom, ruled by an unbroken dynasty since 1394: the Sultan’s Palace built in 1917 by King Njoya — the man who invented his own writing system — and the new Royal Bamoun Museum, an extraordinary building shaped like a two-headed serpent, which finally brought a century of royal treasures out of the palace vaults. The craftsmen’s village follows, with its lost-wax bronze foundries.
Your Africa Tour Travel representative greets you at Yaounde-Nsimalen International Airport and accompanies you on a private, air-conditioned transfer into the city, about 25 kilometres. After check-in we hold a friendly welcome meeting: a full day-by-day walkthrough of your programme, how each excursion works, the protocol to observe in a traditional chiefdom, and local etiquette. We set up your local SIM card with data and add you to our WhatsApp group. Welcome dinner of poulet DG and groundnut sauce.
WELCOME DINNER

The National Museum of Cameroon, housed in the former presidential palace built in the 1930s, holds ethnographic collections from all ten regions of the country (closed Mondays, open 10:00 to 17:00). We continue to the Reunification Monument, whose architecture represents the four cultural areas of Cameroon, with its contemporary art gallery in the basement and a panorama over the administrative quarter. The afternoon is spent at the Mvog-Betsi zoological park, home to primates of the Congo Basin.
BREAKFAST | LUNCH

A 7:00 departure on the N4 through Bafia and Bangangte to Bafoussam, 296 kilometres of wooded savannah giving way to highland plateau, about five hours. On arrival in the Grassfields, the Bandjoun chiefdom, one of the most spectacular ensembles of traditional Bamileke architecture, with the chief's house, the royal huts and the notables' square. Next door, Bandjoun Station, the contemporary art foundation created by the artist Barthelemy Toguo.
BREAKFAST | LUNCH | DINNER

A full day at Foumban, 75 kilometres from Bafoussam, capital of a kingdom ruled by an unbroken dynasty since 1394. The Sultan's Palace was built in 1917 by King Njoya, the man who invented his own writing system. Beside it stands the new Royal Bamoun Museum, opened in 2020, whose architecture takes the form of a two-headed serpent and which finally brought a century of royal treasures out of the palace. The craftsmen's village follows: lost-wax bronze foundries, wood carving and Bamoun embroidery. If your day falls on a Friday, you also catch the Fantasia, the mounted parade held after prayers in honour of the Sultan.
BREAKFAST | LUNCH | DINNER

The Batoufam chiefdom, another jewel of the Chiefdoms Route, with its recently redesigned museum displays. Then Bafoussam market and the arabica coffee plantations of the highlands, with a tasting. The day closes at the Metche Falls on the Dschang road. All movement finishes before nightfall at 18:30.
BREAKFAST | LUNCH | DINNER

A 7:00 departure and the road back from Bafoussam to Yaounde, about five hours, with a lunch stop at Bangangte. Late in the afternoon, the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Cathedral and the Boulevard du 20-Mai.
BREAKFAST | LUNCH

The Cameroonian Art Museum at the Benedictine monastery on Mount Febe holds one of the finest collections of masks and statuary in the country, and the summit at 1,221 metres gives the best panorama over the seven hills of Yaounde. The afternoon is free for the craft market in the Lac quarter. Closing dinner and presentation of your photo report.
BREAKFAST | DINNER

A final Cameroonian breakfast, then a private transfer to Yaounde-Nsimalen International Airport — we arrive three hours ahead, as local formalities take time — with photos and a personal album to treasure.
